Puritan- broad term for people who left England during the 1600's to break from the church of England. Wanted to 'purify' themselves and their religion, so they left for the 'New World', where they faced many hardships.
Puritan Beliefs:
everyday world & spiritual world are closely intertwind
were convinced that god backed their cause
humans are sinful, & most will suffer in hell for eternity
BUT some will be saved & will go to heaven (but you never know who) so they led pious lives in attempt to avoid hell
believed external events contained messages from god
believed in divine providence- god directly interviewing in human affairs
